How to Setup NAS
Nas(Network Attached Storage)
Hardware Requirements:-
- Spare PC/Laptop
2. Another Laptop/Pc (For Easy Setup)
3. Lan/Ethernet Cable
4. Wifi Router
5. 2 Pen Drives
Software Requirements:-
True NAS previously knowns as FreeNas Operating System (https://www.freenas.org/)
Step 1 — Install True NAS OS from the official website
Step 2 — Make a Bootable USB using Rufus/Cmd (4GB Pendrive should work fine) Let’s say this is pen drive A
Step 3 — Open your Spare laptop and connect both pen drives and also connect the Ethernet cable whose other end is connected to Lan port of your wi-fi router and install TrueNAS Os from pen drive A. At the time of installing, it will ask where you want to install the new OS, there select your Pen drive B
Step 4 — After installing, Restart the Pc and remove the Pen drive A. Select to boot from Pen drive B, boot order can be changed from boot menu.
Step 5 — As soon as you boot in TrueNas , there you can see An IP assigned to you like http://192.168.1.20 or any other. You can also assign IP of your choice, just go to your router’s setting and assign a static IP for the said System.
Step 6 — Open your other personal laptop, and in the web browser type in that IP. Make Sure you are connected to same WIFI network.
Step 7 — After opening, your basic True NAS system is Up and running.
Keep in Mind Both Laptop should be on Same Network and the spare laptop should only be connected by the Ethernet cable, as wireless is not supported in TrueNas OS
Always keep in mind you should have another empty hard disk plugged in your spare laptop, which will be used as NAS Storage, empty because it will get format by the TrueNas OS for the required file format since it doesn’t support FAT32 or NTFS format
